No one injured in fire that destroys Manor mobile home

A fire destroyed an older, single-wide mobile home Sunday afternoon while the resident was on a motorcycle ride and his three children were nearby swimming in their grandfather's pool.
Jason Layton occupied the home at 113 Railroad Drive in the Dogtown area of McGrann in Manor Township. The owners are his parents, Kenneth and Kay Layton, who live closer than a block away.
Neighbors said the trailer is on Center Alley Road on a back street that runs next to Quay Street.

Legislation gives mobile-home owners protection if land is sold

For years, Amy Lamke's answer to her affordable housing dilemma was bouncing with her daughter, Katlin, from one place to another, sharing space with strangers whom she met through classified ads.
But when she discovered Deep Run, a community of mobile homes tucked away off a two-lane road near Route 1 in Elkridge, in Howard County, Lamke figured she had found the stability she and her daughter had longed for.
The divorced mother bought a gray single-wide with two bedrooms for $19,000 in 2005. It had a wood-paneled interior and barely enough room to fit her bulky living room furniture. She planted bushes, hung a wind chime and arranged lawn furniture on her porch.

Mobile-home owners' suit dismissed

A bid by some tenants of a Thousand Oaks mobile home park to obtain more relocation money failed when a deadline was missed for serving the city with a lawsuit.
Oxnard attorney Richard Francis sued Thousand Oaks in mid-May on behalf of 22 coach owners who are expected to be displaced from their rented spaces in the Conejo Mobile Home Park in Newbury Park.
Although the city, park owner and other tenants have agreed to a relocation package, the suit alleges the tenants involved in the lawsuit would lose a significant amount of money invested in their homes because the city violated its own law governing relocations fees.
But the suit was dismissed last week because the city was not served within 90 days of the filing as required.
“It was something that could’ve been fought,” said Francis, adding that he is working pro bono and is pursuing other strategies.
