Home Depot and the PST
Every time I see or hear of a Canadian tax-related story, I think I make the same face. It's the face that consists of a lifted brow and a semi-surprised look while I skim through the paragraphs. I quit reading the details years ago because, well, it always ends the same way with Canadians being taxed more, on something, for some reason. This story, however, kept my attention word-for-word. This time I wore a smirk instead of the traditional brow life. It appears that Home Depot is unclear on our Canadian PST rules.

Soquel Home Depot store robbed at gunpoint
SOQUEL — Sheriff's deputies evacuated Home Depot on 41st Avenue so police dogs could search the cavernous store for two armed robbers who stole about $300 just before 5 p.m. Friday.
One of the robbers, described as a Latino man in his 30s wearing a red shirt, approached an employee and asked for money. He then lifted his shirt to show a small handgun tucked into his waistband, according to emergency radio traffic. A second man, who was heavy-set and his 40s wearing a yellow shirt, was with the armed man.

Jury stalemate in Home Depot murder penalty
SANTA ANA – All 12 jurors in the trial of murderer Jason Russell Richardson decided he should die for killing a Tustin Home Depot manager during a robbery, but a lunch break to do some soul searching for now has spared him from the death penalty.
With jurors "hopelessly deadlocked" 9-3 in favor of the death penalty, Orange County Superior Court Judge William Froeberg declared a mistrial Thursday.
Prosecutors will retry the penalty phase of his trial in the hopes of persuading a new jury to sentence the twice-convicted rapist to death for shooting and killing manager Tom Egan Feb. 9, 2007, during a robbery at the Tustin Home Depot.

TiVo, Rubbermaid, Deere, Home Depot: Intellectual Property
May 17 (Bloomberg) -- TiVo Inc.’s patent-infringement victory against Dish Network Corp. and EchoStar Corp. will get a second look by the court that hears appeals of patent cases.
The court said May 14 all active judges will take a second look at a panel’s March 4 finding that Dish and EchoStar were violating Tivo’s digital-video recording patent, even after claiming they had altered their technology to avoid infringement. TiVo, based in Alviso, California, had argued the changes weren’t sufficient.
TiVo, a pioneer of digital-video recording, said it’s disappointed in the decision to have further proceedings in the case, which began with a lawsuit in 2004 against Dish and EchoStar when those two were a single satellite-television and equipment company. TiVo shares had more than doubled in the 12 months before May 14 as investors bet the litigation would favor the company.

Nursery and garden center moves next to Home Depot
Native Roots Garden Center has moved to a larger shop north of Home Depot, offering more space for its trees, shrubs, gardening tools and seeds.
The gardening retailer reopened at the new location Saturday. The store opened in 2004 at 114 E. Animas Road (County Road 250), next to Bread.
Owner John Wickman said he decided to move Native Roots after his landlord raised his rent and construction on Florida Road crimped business.
