Bringing design tools all under one roof
Many home builders in the city offer the services and advantages of a design centre, a place to help you choose your interior finishings after you’ve purchased your house.

Walking into these massive studios can be a bewildering experience, with rows of lighting, plumbing, bath tubs, paint chips stretching every way, leaving new home buyers asking themselves: What now?

So, we asked the experts: What can new home buyers expect when they go to a design centre?

“If you’ve ever built your home before, you will find it a great experience, especially if you’ve designed without the benefit of a centre before,” says Heather Saunders, interior design manager for Shane Homes.

The biggest benefit of going to a design centre is that it brings all the products you need to outfit your home under one roof.

“Our intention is to make the home shopping experience more efficient and customer-friendly for clients,” says Andrew Davidson, vice-president of business development for Cardel Homes.

“Without a design centre, you will be going to 10, 15, maybe more, different companies to put your home together.

“This is not only time-consuming and hectic, but if you don’t have experience in interior design, you will struggle to pull everything together.”

Yes, it can be overwhelming starting out, trying to create your dream home from the inside out. Saunders suggests everyone using the centre should come in on their own to browse.

“You get to see the selection that we have, get some ideas,” she says. “Just seeing how everything works together, it takes a lot of the guesswork out of it.”

To help you along your home designing way, most design centres will offer the services of an interior designer.

“With the talent and experience of a capable interior designer, the process becomes less of a burden and a little more fun,” Davidson says. “They will talk to you to get a sense of your lifestyle, your tastes and your needs with your home.”

One of the best things that a home buyer can bring to their design centre experience is the right attitude.

“People need to understand that a project of that magnitude requires time and planning, as well as an open mind,” Davidson says. “It will take a lot of effort, but at the end of the day, what a design centre can to is help you through that experience.”
