It is important to do your homework before starting a home improvement project. The Andover YMCA/Community Center, 15200 Hanson Blvd., is hosting a free home improvement show Saturday, March 19 to help people with their research.

The North Suburban Home Improvement Show is in its 13th year of existence. Once again, there will be over 100 exhibitors set up in the fieldhouse that can answer questions and provide packets of information and business cards.

The show hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but if you have kids, bring them early. The first 200 kids will get material to make a small wooden boat that they can take home with them.

A couple of demonstrations will take place throughout the day. Demonstrations on how to properly prune young trees will take place at the DNR/City Forestry booth at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Demonstrations on seed starting will be at the Anoka County Master Gardeners Booth at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

There will be a wide variety of vendors to help with any home improvement questions. Besides the vendors who can answer questions on room remodeling, there are also vendors who can help with improvements on the outside of the home from siding to roofs to decks to landscaping. There will be financial institutions on-hand to answer questions on obtaining loans for projects. City staff members from Andover, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Ramsey can answer questions about the city permitting process.

For the green consumer, there will be information on green energy technology and recycling services.

To figure out the most efficient way to get rid of all the construction debris, there will be people available to answer those questions as well.

And once again, all this advice is for free at the show, which is sponsored by the cities of Andover, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Ramsey.

A hockey tournament is scheduled during the home show, so the parking lot will be packed. There will be overflow parking at Andover Elementary School with a shuttle service available to and from the school during the show.
