Inspired Interiors: Spirit of Rashid design goes far beyond furniture
You don't forget the first time you meet Karim Rashid, the prolific New York City industrial designer known for Dirt Devils and breathtaking Italian design. He's intense, creative, modern and international, and he definitely makes a statement from his white eyeglass frames to his tattoos. In October, Rashid introduced his first custom upholstery collection for an American company. His sofas for Rowe Furniture show his hard-edged contemporary flair -- Milan meets Middle America. "He wants to change the world through contemporary design," explains Kate Holcomb, director of marketing for Rowe Furniture. "He has worked with Italian companies for furniture, but this is his first venture into the American furniture market." The collection is small and special. The fabrics are exclusive patterns designed by Rashid, and so are the furniture styles. Think lines and angles and bold color combinations. "This is a very narrow line for residential for now," says Holcomb. "We have a larger assortment for hospitality (hotels and restaurants). The fabrics and patterns work very well in residential. They're very fresh and different." Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation. He has more than 3,000 designs in production and has won more than 300 awards in about 35 countries. He has designed waste baskets, chairs, interiors and exhibitions. His clients range from Audi to Artemide, Samsung and Swarovski. He is the author of several books; the latest is "KarimSpace: The Interior Design and Architecture of Karim Rashid," released in 2009. Here's just an idea of his philosophy: "I believe that we could be living in an entirely different world -- one that is full of real contemporary inspiring objects, spaces, places, worlds, spirits and experiences. Design has been the cultural shaper of our world from the start. We have designed systems, cities and commodities. We have addressed the world's problems. Now design is not about solving problems, but about a rigorous beautification of our built environments. "Design is about the betterment of our lives poetically, aesthetically, experientially, sensorially and emotionally." http://www.indystar.com/article/20110122/LIVING28/101220304/Inspired-Interiors-Spirit-Rashid-design-goes-far-beyond-furniture?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Living |
