Green up the house: Home show to feature latest design trends
Thinking of updating your bathroom, upgrading your kitchen countertops or making your home a little green? If so, you're not alone. Bathrooms and kitchens are among the most popular rooms for remodeling projects for homeowners every year, according to industry experts. And ever since the word "green" became a verb -- as in "greening" -- more Americans are looking into ways to make their homes more energy-efficient. But before heading to a home improvement store, you might want to head to the El Paso Spring Home Show this weekend at the El Paso convention center. The home show is sponsored by the El Paso Association of Builders and put on by R.J. Promotions in Missouri. Another home show, the 12th annual Home & Garden Expo, put on by Expo LTD of Corpus Christi, will be March 4-6 also at the convention center. Jennifer Allsbury, show manager for R.J. Promotions, said this weekend's home show will feature 150 businesses, mostly dealing with the interior of the home -- including appliances, countertops, flooring and windows -- as well as roofers and builders. Able Pools & Spa also will be an exhibitor and will have a hot-tub giveaway. "We find that the people who come to these events are wanting to do some kind of project," she said. Ed La Puma, owner of 77 Stone, 7700 Gateway Blvd. East, said people are still interested in granite and quartz countertops for their kitchens and bathrooms. The business sells granite, quartz, marble, travertine, slate, limestone and onyx countertops. "You can get so many different varieties of colors and it has durability," said La Puma of granite. Quartz is an engineered stone that is 93 percent natural, clean and hygienic, he said. Quartz also stains less easily than granite because it's less porous. The trend of mixing countertop materials within the kitchen or in other areas of the home will continue in 2011, experts said. "Maybe in the island you want a real bold granite that has a lot of color and then to do something more uniform" on the other countertops, La Puma said. "It really individualizes the kitchen and redirects the focal point toward where you want people to see." La Puma said cabinetry for outdoor grills also will be big this year. He added that people are not afraid to use granite outside for grill countertops or outdoor tables. "We've been doing some outdoor kitchens that are bigger that indoor ones," he said. He recommends using lighter colors for the outside and says the product needs to be resealed about once a year. Show promoters said the show will definitely have some exhibitors who focus on energy-efficient products. Luis Espinoza, supervisor of windows for Mechanical Technologies and Clear Choice Windows, said representatives will be at the home show to offer information on refrigerated air and low-e window packages. Low-e windows are recommended because they help prevent heat from escaping during the winter and reduce solar heat entering the home during the summer. "Throughout the years, more homeowners are trying to add a green package for their houses. We now have blown-in argon insulation so the heat will stay inside the house," he said. Experts say low-e windows cost more than conventional windows but reduce heating and cooling costs in the long run. Kathy Reyes, marketing director for Tropicana Homes, is looking forward to the show, saying it's a good opportunity to promote the company, which has been in business since 1950. Builder representatives will have a 1950s-style theater setting to showcase a two-minute video about their history in El Paso. The builder constructs homes starting at $99,999. "These events have always worked for us," she said, adding that people like being able to ask questions about the builder and their work. The builder will have a giveaway of a home theater as part of its promotion. http://www.lcsun-news.com/las_cruces-sunlife/ci_17160976 |
