Design matters in home gyms
Brigitte Kolbe talks to Bryan Sinclair of Sinclair's Fitness about custom-made home gyms.

Bryan Sinclair is passionate about helping clients design a goodlooking and functional fitness room.

"The layout is extremely important," he says. "Many people are now including the room in the initial design of their homes, which is ideal."

Bryan and wife Janine opened their Collins St business - which includes a huge range of equipment for hire - 15 years ago. The couple have two children, Hailey and Matt, and three goats and one dog.

What are your design rules?

For a gym room you need to keep the room simple, with no lowered ceilings. It's good to have plenty of windows and preferably floor boards. All equipment should have mats under them.

If it was your last meal, what table, chair and dinnerware would you choose?

If it was my last meal I would have a barbecue, use the Esky as my seat and my knees as the table. No dinnerware needed-therefore no washing up.

Given a blank room, where do you start?

I'd add plenty of windows, quality blinds, floor boards and ceiling heat. I have three types of heating at home, and the ceiling heat is up there with the wood heater. But, if you're working out at home with our gym equipment you wouldn't need heating!

What's your favourite room at home and why?

That would be the eight-ball room. Never underestimate the fun of a competitive game of strip Kelly pool!

What's a favourite piece in your home?

It would be the sturdy portable soccer table purchased from Sinclair's Fitness of course.

Describe your style.

My style is pretty simple. Work hard, play hard. I love barbecues at home. We have a few sportsmen's nights at home each year which are always great fun.

What's the next big thing?

Next big thing is the baby boomers transforming their kids' rooms - now vacated - into small gyms. Get a few friends over twice a week and you have a great social life and get fit while you do it!
