Want a home gym? Here are some tips
Early fall is the perfect time of year to start thinking about putting together that home gym.

Soon the weather will turn and the outside activities will slow. The early morning jog or walk might lose ground to a little extra sleep, as the temps drop and the mornings get darker.

The home gym is a convenient affordable way to get your workouts in regardless of what Mother Nature sends your way. No travel, no crowd, no excuses.

We have a gym in our house, and I have helped put them together for others. Although a home gym is often a reflection of one's personal goals, interests and philosophies, here are some recommendations to help you get started.

I would say the most important aspect of the gym is space. I realize it's in the home, so space might be limited, but try to use as much as you can. It's also important to keep that space open. Don't clutter it with too much equipment. Wide open space is one of the best tools of exercise, allowing for bodyweight exercises, plyometrics and any type of dynamic or moving exercises.

Create an atmosphere that makes you want to be there. Choose the colors you like, your favorite posters or even motivational quotes. Give it some personality, like your bedroom when you were a kid. When you walk in before every workout, the room should get you motivated to exercise.

Think jump ropes are just for kids? Just try it for a few minutes. It's a workout. The heart just wants to be worked, it doesn't care how. Jumping rope for several minutes elicits the same response as using a cardio machine, and for a lot less. Use them to warm up or to finish off a workout. Either way, it's a fun and challenging way to get in shape and improve your footwork.

I wouldn't build a gym without a variety of dumbbells and kettlebells. They are still the most versatile tool in the training world, and the best buy for your dollar. They aren't just for building muscle either. A dumbbell or kettlebell program can be designed to build your cardio into your resistance training (another reason you don't need expensive cardio equipment).

Medicine balls are another versatile, inexpensive tool to add to your gym. They can be used to enhance almost all core exercises, and if you have a solid wall to throw them at, they build muscle power while giving you a cardiorespiratory workout.

A box or an adjustable step is another must have for the home gym. Box jumps, step-ups and elevated lunges work the muscles of the lower body in a way that can't be done with conventional exercises.

For pulling and pushing movements in even the smallest space, resistance bands can't be beat. Anchor them to a door or under foot and you're ready to go. Traveling? Throw them in your suitcase.

Having a home gym doesn't have to be a luxury. Dedicate a space, fill it with these tools and you'll be on your way.
