Mobile home business fire may have been caused by lightning
Carroll County fire officials are investigating the explosion of a propane tank at Lyle Enterprise on Highway 27 that destroyed a mobile home and several vehicles.

Fire Chief Tracy Smith said the cause of the fire, which occurred around 7 p.m. Monday, is still undetermined.

“All indications point to a lightning strike,” said Smith, who mentioned that there was nothing suspicious about the fire.

It took firefighters an hour to bring the blaze under control.

“We were here until about midnight putting out hot spots,” Smith said.

No one was hurt in the explosion which occurred during severe weather.

Owner Mike Lyle and his wife Cathie had gone out to eat. Upon pulling up to their home, located near the business, he noticed his shop was on fire.

Cathie Lyle said neighbors saw the lightning strike and must have alerted firefighters who arrived shortly after.

Mike Lyle said the fire caused about $300,000 in damage that included a 2,400-square-foot shop, a motor home and a mobile home that was being used for storage.

“The fire burned up four to five trucks, a tractor, some lawn mowers and all my supplies,” he said. “I would like to commend the firefighters that came down because they were here within minutes and they were able to save my office. I am really thankful for that. We were very fortunate because it (the fire) didn’t get to our house. The wind favored us and it didn’t blow toward our home.”

The Lyles have been in the mobile home business for almost 40 years and had just transferred Cathie Lyle’s downtown formal wear shop, formerly Social Butterflies, to the office that suffered minor damage.

“We were remodeling some of it,” Mike Lyle said. “The major stuff (burned) was just the mobile home, but our business is still open and we’re going to work out of the house for a few days.”

Lyle Enterprise is a family-owned business started by Lyle and his father.

Cathie Lyle wanted to reiterate how much they appreciate the fire department.

“They did an outstanding job,” she said. “They were wonderful.”
