Home Depot assistant store manager dies working on future in-law's home
CORPUS CHRISTI - Lucy Carranza could feel the electric current running through her boyfriend, Daniel Naranjo, as she tried to pry him from the wall in her parents' attic Thursday morning.

He had said he just needed to add one final staple to the insulation they spent the last two days putting up.

That final staple struck a live electrical wire.

With her left hand on the stapler, right hand on his shoulder, Lucy managed to release Daniel after a few seconds. He fell face-first to the ground, unresponsive.

"He died in the arms of the love of his life," Daniel's brother, Lupe Naranjo, said.

Firefighters arrived soon afterward, and Lucy instructed them to break through a hallway ceiling to reach the man who she too described as the love of her life. Paramedics tried CPR, defibrillators and medication, but failed to get Daniel's heart beating again.

He was pronounced dead at 10:34 a.m. at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital.

"He was my soulmate. He completed me ... never in a million years did I think this was going to happen," Lucy said through tears in a phone interview.

Lucy said Daniel not only fell in love with her almost five years ago, but he also fell in love with her now 13-year-old daughter, Arriana.

"At school, she would introduce him as her dad," said Lucy. In return, Daniel would tell people, "That's my gorda," using the Spanish word for "fat" to tease the tall and slender Arriana.

After Daniel's death, Lucy said she told her daughter, "You have the biggest guardian angel up there. He'll move heaven and earth for you.

Daniel, 38, lived in Victoria and was as an assistant store manager at Home Depot.

"He was kind of like an uncle. My favorite uncle. He was easy to talk to and had the best sense of humor," said Daniel's co-worker, London Spears.

London said Daniel was planning a transfer to Corpus Christi to be closer to his parents, who live in Odem, and Lucy, who lives in Corpus Christi.

"He would work long hours, but he was always so faithful to Lucy," his brother said. "'No' wasn't in his vocabulary. He was always there to help."

That would explain why, on his vacation time, Daniel was helping install insulation in his girlfriend's parents' attic.

Lucy said the couple planned to head to San Antonio this weekend to finish their vacation.

And he planned to take her dancing Thursday night.

"But I'm sure he's dancing in heaven without me right now," she said.
