Renovated career
It’s no surprise Tara Dennis has a natural touch for designing and decorating. Since she was a child, the interior designer, decorator and TV presenter, was surrounded by the hustle and bustle of creative DIY projects.

“Growing up my parents were compulsive renovators,” said Dennis, who lives in the upper North Shore with her partner and two children.

“They were always knocking walls down so going into design was a natural progression.”

For the past 20 years, she has stuck to that passion and become a domestic guru and an inspiration for thousands of amateur decorators across Australia.

Whether it’s converting a cheap chest of drawers into a designer video cabinet or giving the old kitchen tiles a modern makeover, Dennis’s weekly design segment on Better Homes and Gardens allows anyone to try their hand at adding some colour and fun to their homes.

Before the start of her television career, Dennis was based in London where she had her own painting and decorating company. It was also in London where she also enrolled in a three-month course in paint finishes - her only formal training.

After returning to Sydney, Dennis worked as a product manager for a paint company and coordinated design stories backstage at Channel 9 when she was plucked from behind-the-scenes of the lifestyle show Changing Rooms in 1997 and given a role as an on-air designer.

Since then, she has appeared on Our House, Postcards, Renovation Rescue and Burke’s Backyard and worked alongside industry greats such as Shirley Strachan, Reg Livermore and Rebecca Gilling.

“They are all amazing and highly acclaimed actors. Especially so early on, it was quite humbling for me to be working with them. You listen with all your might,” Dennis said.

While she never aspired to working on television - she admitted she got stage fright when collecting awards at school - Dennis saw it as an opportunity to share here interests with a bigger audience.

“If you said to me while I was at school that I’d be doing this, I never would have picked it. Back in those days they had presenters who were professional actors and trained at NIDA. I’m extremely lucky because I’m doing what I love to do and communicating it to the audience, even if there is a camera in front of me.”

In addition to her work on Better Homes and Gardens, Dennis is a mum, style consultant, guest speaker, face of Plush sofas and author.

She released a book called Home in 2005 and has an online website and shop taradennis.com.

But on top of all this, she is able to manage a balance between her work and family by “multi-tasking” and maintaining a “good system”.

“I try to maintain order at home by being organised as I possibly can so that when I come home I already have some things in place,” she said.

“Having your car keys on hooks beside the front door and laying out clothes in the morning are small things, but they do count.”

For Dennis, it also helps to have a good team in her partner, who often helps cook dinner, and her 18-year-old daughter.

She also has a son who is two.

Dennis said the peace and quiet was the best thing about living on the north shore.

“It’s nice to have space where you can relax.”
