Bloomfield Pulls Off Comeback to Defend Essex County Crown Against Livingston in Tight Three Game Ma
BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The Livingston Lancers were in an unfamiliar position as they headed to Bloomfield High School for their Essex County final matchup against the Bloomfield Bengals. Traditionally, the defending champions host the final match and for the previous four years, Livingston’s gym was the site of the final. This year was different because Steven Valhalla propelled the Bengals to the 2009 county crown, making Bloomfield home court for the Essex County Finals. Unaccustomed to a boisterous crowd cheering against them, the Lancers were greeted by rowdy home fans in Bloomfield for the Essex County Finals. The team was certainly phased by the crowd, as their communication was not up to par. "We definitely need to communicate better," opposite JP Tirone said. The lack of vocal cohesion on the court led to multiple miscommunications on simple passes that led to key points won by Bloomfield.

The teams traded the first four points, as the Bengals came out a much-improved squad from the last time the two teams squared off. Livingston could not grab the lead in the early going, as the defending champions worked off the energy of their fans to build up to a three point lead.

Despite leading for the first half of the first game, Bloomfield could not build a sizable lead. Livingston fought to within 13-12, but a JP Tirone front row attack could not get over the net. The sideout gave the Lancers a chance to regroup, as a sideout and a Tirone kill tied the score once again at 14 apiece.

Bloomfield ran off two quick points from the back row to force a Coach Partelow timeout. The timeout reenergized the Lancers, as the squad tied the score at 16 before Bloomfield took the lead right back. Behind a Meuvz Vincent block, a Vincent kill, and a Billy Williams kill, the Lancers were finally in command. Bloomfield’s coach took a timeout to compose his squad. The team came out of the huddle with as much gusto as Livingston did after their first timeout. Bloomfield tied the score at 21 with two well-placed serves.

It appeared the home squad would be able to pull out the first game, but Livingston would not go away quietly. The Lancers grabbed two points to take the lead, but a Bengals’ sideout pushed the tally to 23-22 and a block of Shenyan Wang’s middle attack tied the tally at 23. Coach Partelow spent his final timeout of the period in hopes of regaining control of his team, which was in danger of losing the first game.

The most important point of the game followed the timeout. Billy Williams answered the bell with a kill down the line to push the lead to game point. At game point, Bloomfield’s serve receive dug the ball to continue the point. The ball barely got over the net, where it was slammed over by Williams. The initial attack was dug out, but there was confusion at the net, where two Bloomfield players collided and the attack sailed long to give the point and the first game to Livingston.

The second game began much like the first, as the two teams were even after eight points. The teams traded points before Livingston gained back serve. The crowd supporting the home side was noticeably quieter in the early going, as the enthusiasm was seemingly sucked out of the home side after losing the first game. Neither team took a sizable lead in the early going, as Livingston held the lead for the majority of the second game without building more than a three-point advantage.

When it appeared that Bloomfield would finally take the lead, Livingston simply grabbed the sideout. Again, Bloomfield threatened to take the lead, but a Justin Delman tip gained the Lancers the serve and a three-point lead. Bloomfield refused to go away though, as a sideout following a Bengals’ timeout gave the defending champions back serve within striking distance.

The back and forth affair continued, as the teams traded two more points. With the Bengals holding serve down by a single point, Livingston spent their first timeout of the second game. A front row attack that sailed away from libero Ed Jung tied the score and a JP Tirone attack fell just to the right of the line to force a timeout from Livingston. The team was down 24-21 after a perfectly placed kill from Bloomfield’s outside hitter.

At game point for Bloomfield, the Lancers went with Tirone, who has consistently provided a clutch play when the Lancers needed it. He gave them the sideout, but Josh Kim’s serve did not get over the net on the next point. Bloomfield captured the second game 25-22 to force a deciding third game.

Meuvz Vincent set the tone for the third game immediately, with a thunderous kill. The teams continued to alternate points, as the Bengals responded from the Lancers’ barrage of attacks with three of their own. The score was knotted at four before a Tirone kill and a double block of Bloomfield’s middle hitter. Refusing to spot the Lancers a large lead, the Bengals immediately rebounded to tie the score.

The Bengals kept pace with the Lancers until finding the opportune time to build a lead at 16-13. Sensing the game was slipping away, Coach Partelow spent the team’s first timeout of the game.

The Lancers carefully picked apart their opponents for three consecutive points to tie the score. A Vincent kill gave the Lancers the lead and Sean Kim’s exceptional serve continued their run to force a Bloomfield timeout.

Unlike his previous five serves, Kim’s first following the timeout could not clear the net. Fortunately, yet another Vincent kill gave the Lancers back serve.

The Bengals used three Livingston hitting errors to gain back the lead, but Livingston tied the score soon after. The teams alternated points and the score was knotted at 21.

Finding themselves behind late in a game once again, after a miscommunication gave the Bengals a 22-21 lead, the Lancers spent their final timeout. The teams once again alternated points, which preceded a Tirone kill to tie the score.

The Lancers were down to their last point after a Bloomfield kill, but Livingston went back to Tirone, who delivered the game-tying kill, a rocket down the line. The Lancers could not dig out another Bengal kill and it was game point again for their opponents.

The stomach-churning game refused to end, as the teams alternated points again. Just when it appeared Livingston would sneak out with a county title, the defending champions refused to be embarrassed in their home gym. A misplayed serve receive gave the Bengals the third game and the match by a 27-25 margin.

Players and fans stormed the court to celebrate the team’s back-to-back championship wins as the stunned Lancers were forced to painfully watch the celebration.

As a senior, Tirone felt there was a responsibility to show up and play his best, although the senior didn’t necessarily believe that occurred. "I don’t believe we played our best, but I know Bloomfield played a very strong game. We did not play our game and had lots of trouble blocking all around," he said.

The team still believes they can knock off any team in New Jersey, however. The senior opposite pointed out, "I still think we are a good team and can go far in states."

Only time will tell if the two year varsity player’s words will reign true, as the Lancers begin their run through the North II region of the NJSIAA state tournament next Thursday at home against the winner of Union City and Solomon Schechter.
