Interior design trends for springtime
Spring is finally here, but after months of living in semi-darkness, all that spring sunshine can really show up the bits of your home that have got a little tatty during your hibernation.

If scuffed paintwork and worn-out living room furniture are making your house feel more shabby than chic, it could be time for an update. But before you get stuck in to your home improvements, let us give you some style inspiration with our round-up of the top interior design trends for 2010.

Style gets comfy

2010 is all about the trend they're calling 'style with comfort'. And that's good news for your tootsies because, according to design magazine LaLuminata.co.uk, the shag pile carpet is making a come-back. Speaking to the Independent, LaLuminata.co.uk said that staying in has become the new going out, hence the need to "relax in a serene and comforting living environment".

So apart from wall-to-wall shag pile, what else can you do to give your home that stylish yet comfortable look? Keep paint colours muted and stay away from loud patterns and harsh lighting. If it's your sofa that needs updating, choose living room furniture with rounded edges in soft fabrics like suede. Or for more subtle changes, a lovely thick rug or some fur throws to go over your bedding will give you the 'style with comfort' look on a shoestring.

Get back to nature

The eco trend shows no sign of disappearing and, according to Channel 4's 4homes style magazine, it's all about choosing the most natural materials possible and keeping them true to their original state. They predict that wood will continue to be used as a focal point in interiors, accessorised with other natural materials such as stone.

To follow this trend in your own home, choose eco paints when redecorating and keep things like curtains and bedding in natural fibres. If it's your bedroom furniture that needs an overhaul, be bang on the eco trend by buying a second-hand wooden bed and sanding it back to show off the natural grain.

Colour-blocking

Want to add interest to a boring room without spending a fortune? Then colour-blocking could be the design trend for you. This decorating technique, which involves painting blocks of different colours on a wall in stripes or rectangles, was big in the 1970s and is now back with a vengeance.

But what colours should you choose? Well, make sure one of them is turquoise, as colour specialists Pantone.com have made it their hottest shade of the year.

If colour-blocking isn't for you, you could always just add some turquoise accessories to your home. Go for a turquoise lamp or vase, or some turquoise bedding or curtains.

The vintage cottage look

From country house glamour to something more kitsch and retro, the vintage cottage look is a big trend to look out for in 2010. And it's something that's easy to achieve in your own home. Think large floral blooms adorning everything from your tableware to your soft furnishings. And when it comes to bedroom furniture, get the look on a budget by painting a plain white bedside table with country-cottage-style flowers.
