Home and Garden show draws nearly 400
Early indications are that the first incarnation of the Vinton Home and Garden Show was a rousing success.

Held Saturday and Sunday at Vinton-Shellsburg High School, nearly 400 people came through the doors of an event designed to showcase Vinton-area businesses.

Kurt Kerkman, who put the event together, said the idea behind the event was to bring local businesses together, and things panned out well.

“I think we’ve been real happy with the turnout,” he said.

Vinton Unlimited Director Nathan Hesson described reaction as “excellent” for the event.

“We’ve had well over 300 people come through the doors,” he said. “I’ve heard a number of comments about people coming from out of town to see our show.”

Hesson said the goal for the event was about 250 people, and the event nearly topped that on Saturday alone. He said the stream of people has been steady, with few lulls and few times where there was an overwhelming number of people.

Exhibitors filled the VSHS commons area to the point where some businesses that wished to be part of the event had to be turned away, according to Hesson.

“The local businesses have been awesome with their support,” Kerkman said.

Kerkman, who was displaying ponds and retaining walls that his business, Kurt’s Enterprises, sells, said the event was not all about making immediate sales.

“If we didn’t get a sale, we informed everybody what we all do,” he said. “It could be a sale down the road in the future.”

Dave Wessling of Iowa Land Management said everything he has seen and heard has been positive.

“It’s been excellent,” he said. “I think everybody that I’ve talked to has been happy that it went the way that it did.”

The future of the event looks bright, though expansion could depend on space. The high school commons, likely the largest area of its type in Vinton, was filled with exhibitors. Hesson said he is unsure if expanding into the high school gymnasium next year would be a possibility.

“For the first year we’ve had enough space, but next year we’re going to have to reevaluate it,” he said.

He added that exhibitors he spoke to have shared some ideas for next year already.

“People I’ve talked to are real excited about doing it again,” he said.
