Mobile homeowners risk losing their homes
Hundreds of mobile homeowners face losing their homes because of delinquent taxes. This may come as a shock to some but the Missoula treasurer's office says it happens every year.
The first round of notices went out early this year to 800 mobile homeowners in Missoula County, reminding them they were behind on tax payments.
Out of that 800, about half were notified again if they don't pay up their home will be put up for auction.
"This is serious and it does need to be taken care of in a timely manner," Missoula Deputy Treasurer Annie Cathey says.
Out of the 400 notified to pay up or face auction, 250 still have not made any payment arragements. And that means come April they could lose their mobile homes.
"They'd be evicted and have to move out of the home," says Cathey.
The treasurer's office understands it's tough and that's why they provide options, like a 12-month payment plan to help who can't pay their full amount.
"I do think it makes a big difference because there are dire situations out there where people cannot come up with the lump sum of money," Cathey tells us.
This years auction will be held on April 8th.
