Home Depot to close local distribution center
Home Depot is planning to cease operations at its distribution center in Frenchtown Township later this year as part of a reorganization of its distribution system, a move that could displace 75 employees. The Atlanta-based home improvement retailer has been operating the shipping terminal at 1800 Frenchtown Center Dr. since it was built in 2003 in the Frenchtown Industrial Park. It has served primarily as a receiving and shipping operation, taking incoming freight from suppliers and reshipping it as part of a mix to individual Home Depot stores. "Later this year, we plan to open a new state-of-the-art rapid deployment center in Findlay, Ohio," said Jen King, a Home Depot spokeswoman. "That’s going to help us improve service and increase efficiency at many of the stores around the region That facility is part of a larger program to improve our supply chain in the hopes it is going to make it easier for our stores to keep the right products in stock for our customers. As a result we will be closing the transit facility in Monroe." The retailer is shutting down a number of distribution centers while it opens about 20 larger rapid-deployment centers elsewhere around the country. The strategy is expected to enable stores to have a better and more precise mix of products and less out-of-stock or overstocking problems. Home Depot has been leasing the 129,037-square-foot building and the terminal operation has been run by a vendor under an exclusive contract with the retailer. The building has 155 truck loading bays and parking for more than 320 trailers. "Unlike the Monroe facility, the new Findlay distribution center is actually going to be run by The Home Depot," Ms. King said. "However, all the non-Home Depot associates working (at Monroe) now are being encouraged to apply for positions at the new rapid deployment center." She said the employees at the terminal already have been informed of the planned closing. She said the new Findlay facility is expected to create several hundred jobs over the next few years. She said she wasn’t sure exactly of the timetable for completing the Findlay facility or for shutting down the Monroe operation, but said both will occur later this year. "I don’t know exactly how it will work logistically, but essentially that’s what’s going to happen," Ms. King said. "According to construction schedule, it will be later this year but they haven’t nailed down the exact time frame." The building and property in Monroe is for lease or sale. The asking price is $10.5 million. http://www.monroenews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ |
