Home Depot project gets back onto fast track
YUCCA VALLEY — After most of an eight-month delay, Home Depot is finally breaking ground on its property in Yucca Valley’s east end, just east of Avalon Avenue on Twentynine Palms Highway. Currently on site is the FM and Sons grading company, clearing and shaping the 18.36-acre parcel in preparation for what Town Community Development Director Tom Best says is, “an aggressive six-month construction schedule.” Grading is being carefully confined to the project site, according to Best. He added that Town building and safety staff and the Town engineer will be monitoring project progress from start to finish for compliance with standards for noise, aesthetics and traffic. In his experience, this is a strict oversight requirement and he trusts it will help support construction that is clean, in compliance with the project’s conditions of approval and acceptable to the community. Sandbags have been laid around the project site to prevent runoff in the event of heavy rainfall. The sandbags will prevent oils and solvents dispersed in the construction from being washed into the surrounding environment. They should also keep materials and scraps from being washed onto the highway, where they might pose some hazard to motorists. Palisade Road behind the property is being used for access. It eventually will be fully improved and serve as a delivery road for the Home Depot store and for other facilities built in the immediate area. Another roadway above Palisade is being used for water storage and for water delivery via a tie-in roadway to the project site. Some plants were reserved for relocation on the site. Otherwise, 68 Joshua trees and 10 Mojave yuccas were made available for adoption. These plants will go to people who have registered with the Town to receive trees and plants on an as-available basis. Once grading is complete, the development will be inspected by an engineer and assessed for elevation. Once this is finishes, the actual building can begin. In the meantime, equipment and materials are being delivered to the site in preparation for the construction, which will be accomplished by ESI, a general contracting firm from Idaho. Word has it the contractor intends to have walls in place within 28 days. |
