Home & Garden visitors cautious with their plans
Sure, there's a recession. But many people plan to forge ahead with home-improvement projects, if the Fifth Third Bank Cincinnati Home & Garden Show is any indication. The show continues today from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and resumes next week. Some homeowners at Saturday's opening indicated they'll try to save money either by doing work themselves or scaling back plans. Jenny and Tom Houtz of Mason, pushing their 21-month-old daughter, Jordan, in a stroller, came to get ideas for remodeling their kitchen and bathroom. "Instead of looking at totally redoing our kitchen, we're looking at refacing or painting our cabinets, or trying to find ways to make it look good with less money," Jenny said. "Instead of spending 30 grand, we'll spend 15," Tom said. Christian and Coreen Bell, who moved to Deer Park from Florida a year ago, said they recently finished remodeling a bathroom, and have many more projects ahead. Christian sought out the show's equipment and tool rental vendors. "Everything I can, I do myself," he said. Chris Woods of Covington said bathroom and kitchen upgrades and an outdoor patio are on his wish list. "We will be spending some money on our home," he said. "Right now, we're just looking." He looked longingly at a hot tub. "I would love it, but it's kind of out of my league right now." Like many visitors, he came to check out trends and get ideas from about 360 companies, including landscapers, retailers, designers and contractors. As people streamed into the show, vendors were cautiously optimistic. "We're banking on there being a higher percentage of buyers, not just lookers and browsers," said Joel Steinmetz, sales manager for Hammer-Rite, a builder that specializes in decks, basements and screened-in porches. "My thinking is, people are going to renovate what they already have; they may not be so much focused on new home purchases," said Robert Martini, CEO and landscape designer for Premier Landscape Supplies. "There are people out there that have the money and are willing to spend it," said Connie Kerth, vice president of Northern Kentucky's Budget Blinds. "But I think more people are being more cautious shoppers." http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?Dato=20090301 &Kategori=LIFE08&Lopenr=903010320&Ref=AR |
