No place like home ... unless it's Fleming Gym
GREENSBORO -- There's no place like home, but in the meantime, there's no place like a second home.

UNCG opened up Fleming Gymnasium to the Eastern Guilford basketball teams after a fire destroyed their gym in 2006, and the Wildcats presented Spartan officials with a commemorative plaque at halftime of their boys game Tuesday, the last regular-season contest to be played there before the Wildcats move into their new gym next season.

"I'm so glad it all worked out," Eastern athletics director Randall Hackett said. "It would have been a nightmare" trying to schedule anywhere else, he said.

The Wildcats still get to host the North State 2-A tournament there next week, which could make for a perfect farewell tour. The Wildcats boys and girls teams are 9-1 at "home" since Jan. 1.

DOUBLE ZEROS: Bishop McGuinness' gym is officially called the Krispy Kreme Athletic Center, a juxtaposition that has caused more than a few snickers from visiting fans.

But there's been nothing unhealthy about the Villains' play there this season, as the McGuinness boys and girls teams both wrapped up perfect 16-0 records in Northwest 1-A play with wins over Elkin Wednesday.

That's old hat for the girls, who have yet to lose a conference game since joining the NCHSAA four years ago. But it's quite a turnaround for the Villains boys, who went from last place three years ago to the only Northwest 1-A boys team to go undefeated since the last realignment. They're the first McGuinness boys team to run the table in conference.

"We're keeping perspective," head coach Josh Thompson said. "This is a stepping-stone goal to others we have. Every challenge we've put before this team, they've really responded."

The potential for the Villains clearly was there. They returned backcourt aces Aaron Toomey, Ross Diachenko and Steve Nealen as well as forwards Zach Toomey, Jake McSwain and Robbie Fitzgerald from a team that went 17-9 and gave Mount Airy its only conference defeat last season.

An early win over Mt. Zion in Durham proved the Villains could be as good as they appeared, a 49-point win over Rockingham County in December proved they could hang with bigger schools, and their first win over Mount Airy, an 11-point road victory in January, "took us to another level," Thompson said. "Hopefully we'll look back at this one and say it did the same thing."

PAGE BIG MAN HONORED: Julius Brooks' personality doesn't always match his body. Away from the basketball court, the Page senior is a quiet kid who often forgoes words for a smile.

But put him under the lights, and the Pirates' 6-foot-9 center becomes a heat-seeking missile, as seen in the screaming front-page picture of him we ran last week after Page secured its first Metro 4-A regular-season title since 1999 by beating Grimsley.

"I wouldn't want to mess with him when he's out there," Brooks' mother, Karen Jeffries, said.

That ferocity has earned Brooks a nomination as a finalist for the McDonald's All-America team, the most prestigious individual recognition in high school basketball. Brooks is the third Pirate in 10 years to receive the distinction, joining Brandon Clifford (2000) and Marsharee Nealy (2005).

Greensboro Day's Javan Mitchell was also nominated for the award this season.

McDonald's officials recognized Brooks before the Pirates' game against High Point Central on Tuesday.

"He's a great kid," Pirates head coach Robert Kent said. "He's getting more and more aggressive each year he plays."

THINK PINK: Wesleyan Christian Academy will host a "Think Pink" benefit dinner for breast cancer before Friday's home basketball games against Forsyth Country Day. Food from Stamey's Barbecue will be available in the school cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door. The boys varsity game begins at 6 p.m., followed by the girls.
