Dunne objects to nursing home next to his gym
Ben Dunne is battling with a Dublin council after permission was granted for a nursing home beside his fitness centre.

Mr Dunne (60) has branded the care facility's proposals as "bad planning" and appealed to An Bord Pleanala against Fingal County Council's ruling.

TLC Centre Ltd was given the go-ahead for a five-storey, 84-bed nursing home in Northwood, Santry, North Dublin.

But former supermarket boss Mr Dunne told the Herald: "If ambulances or hearses go down the road to the nursing home they can't swing around, there is no turning circle.

"There is no separate entrance for all the things a nursing home will require to keep it up and running -- a separate goods inwards entrance."

The objection is straight forward, he said, adding the board will look at it to see if it is credible or not.

Mr Dunne's Northwood Fitness is located close to the site of the planned care unit.

He said, while the development does not infringe on his land, "it is not well planned for a new nursing home to try to bring ambulances down a relatively narrow road.

"When an ambulance goes down, it will have to back up, it won't be able to turn around," he explained.

"I think it is a health and safety issue as well, where people are walking along a road and with ambulances U-turning and when a hearse goes down to collect a corpse, the hearse will have to back up. It's just very badly planned," Mr Dunne told the Herald.

As part of the decision of the council to grant permission, planners imposed several conditions, though none of the stipulations assuaged Mr Dunne's concerns.

An Bord Pleanala has set a date of May 26 to make a ruling.

Mr Dunne has expanded his business by adding a fourth gym in Carlow to his three Dublin premises; Westpoint in Blanchardstown, Carlisle in Terenure and Northwood in Santry.

He recently revealed that he believes his fitness centres will take a 20pc hit this year, saying December was a "very, very poor" month. Mr Dunne said he did not see an improvement for the economy this year as the recession is "different to any one I've seen before".
