Home Depot workers fix up youth center
Jackie Lillrose can remember making wooden crafts and painting 12 years ago in the art room at the Boys & Girls Club of Lansing.

The 21-year-old Okemos woman revisited her childhood hangout Thursday. She and about 80 Home Depot employee volunteers spruced up the 25,000-square-foot community center.

"It was fun back then, and it's fun right now to come back and make a difference," said Lillrose, who works at The Home Depot in Okemos. "Hopefully, it impacts some children's lives in a good way."

Volunteers from 10 Michigan stores painted, replaced damaged ceiling tiles and carpet, installed vertical window blinds and reorganized storage rooms with new shelves and storage bins. They used $5,000 of donated materials, said organizer Shannon Lamb, department head at The Home Depot in Okemos.

"During these economic times, when nonprofits are reducing their budgets, things like ceiling tiles and shelves don't get replaced," said Sandra Kowalk-Thompson, the club's director of development. "Any time kids get something new, they know someone did it for them. They know that somebody cares, cared enough to put fresh paint on the walls."

The Boys & Girls Club serves 160 to 190 children daily during the school year and 360 a day in the summer, she said.

Lamb's store participates in five community service projects a year, he said. He is captain of the store's branch of Team Depot, a company volunteer program.

"We thought we could come out and just give them a hand, give back to the kids," he said.

He said he hopes the children will see the changes and realize that "someone really wanted to make my second home away from home clean, updated, improved."
