Building your home gym
Do you dread the idea of dragging yourself to the gym in the wee hours of the morning before work, or in the evening after work? Then your own home gym might just be the thing for you.

Gregory Florez, a certified personal trainer, as well as president at the First Fitness Inc., in Salt Lake City, says that it is simple enough to build your home gym and the rewards are great because it ensures that there is no hindrance to getting in shape.

Some tips
Florez gives some tips for setting up your own home gym, be it any single equipment or the whole thing.

Do not give up
You should not give up whatever workout works for you. According to Florez, a good way to keep going is to remember your past victories. Do not buy any equipment just for the sake of it. Buy it so that you can reach your goal.

Try it out
Do not feel shy to first test the equipment that you are going to buy. Everything will seem good for the first few minutes, so try it for more than just a few minutes. As Florez says, the treadmill may seem comfortable in the first 15 minutes but later it may start to give trouble. When you are testing it in the store, test it in the way you want to use it.

Do not forget to test the equipment for your comfort. In other words, it should feel right to work with so that later on you do not have problems.

Include aerobic equipment
It is always a good idea to include aerobic equipment in your gym. There is always time later on for strength training. Nevertheless, remember that you do not end up spending money on something that does not motivate you because that would simply be money ill spent.

Be careful about where you spend
There is equipment that you can get much cheaper than others. For example, it is difficult to get a decent treadmill for under $1000, whereas a whole strength system can be bought for under $200. So take care about where you are spending your money.

Some gym suggestions

Florez has some suggestions to build a dream gym and a budget gym.

The dream gym can include the following:
•    A high quality treadmill, which can be programmed and is heart-rate controlled. (Precor 9.21si, $2,699; 800-4-PRECOR)
•    Aerobic equipment (LifeFitness CT5500HR, $3,300; 888-348-4543)
•    A multi-station home gym (Pacific Fitness Malibu, $3,095; 800-954-1770)
•    Adjustable bench with 15-80 pound dumbbells (Body-Solid Flat/Incline/Decline bench, $219; 800-833-1227, Powerblock weights, $119 and up per set; 800-446-5215)

A budget gym will include:

•    Dumbbells ($16 and up per set)
•    Jump rope ($5 and up)
•    SPRI exercise tubing ($6-$11)
•    Exercise ball ($15)
•    Step or slide ($80)
