Home improvement loan program presented to county
A special home improvement loan program initially offered to cities in the First Suburbs Coalition with the goal of updating older homes and stabilizing neighborhoods is now being offered to surrounding cities and counties who may choose to participate. “In the last two years we’ve had 15 communities who have taken part, including North Kansas City, Kansas City and Gladstone,” said Dean Katerndahl, spokesman for the First Suburbs Coalition. The success of the program has led to requests to expand the program, he said, with requests coming from both sides of the state line. Katerndahl said the only requirements for communities to participate are a $250 annual fee for promotional material as well as the appointment of someone to serve as a coordinator for the program, which in this case would cover unincorporated areas of Clay County. He added the individual participants in the home loan program have given it high marks. Community America Credit Union administers the program. “In most cases it can all be done over the phone,” Katerndahl said. The program offers qualified applicants loans with an interest rate 1.35 percent below Community America’s conventional home loan rate and goes for up to a 10-year period, according to information supplied by Clay County. The loans are for homes with an appraised value of less then $200,000 and can be for up to $30,000. The home must also be owner occupied. “We’ve distributed $2,350,000 in the last two years,” Katerndahl said. WHERE TO TURN Is your home still living in the 1950s?
