A trip to Home Depot ignites passion!
With 2008 coming to an end I find myself thinking forward to the new year. Over the past couple months I have found myself longing for the right time and space to create the types of pieces that spark thought and imagination. Pieces that draw the viewer in and ignite conversation and passion. This afternoon I made a trip to Home Depot to purchase a drain snake for our perpetually clogged sink in the master bathroom. I returned home with that plus batteries, multi-grit sandpaper from 325 - 600, protective eye wear and a hand held butane torch. Somewhere between the power saws and the nylon mallets I had an epiphany. Well, it was more like a little dude in my head yelling at me saying, "Get off your ass already and start putting those mental ramblings into a piece!!!!" It is time to take my metal work back to where it started, creating pieces that tell a story or make a statement about society or reveal something of my inner self. My next piece titled, "That which is sacred...", will be combining metal work with vintage and found objects. I still have a few variations of this piece clanking around in my head but the general subject makes a statement about what society holds as sacred vs. that which truly is, or what we as individuals see as sacred. I have mentioned that I am working to establish a line of textiles jewelry (felted pieces). In all honesty I can't see myself creating pieces that would have exact duplicates in this medium. I really feel that the textures, colors and types of fiber, as well as personal aesthetic at the moment dictates how the piece will unfold. However, I am planning a series of fibers pieces that are inspired by the artwork of renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly, more specifically his "Sea Forms work" and "Poppies" installation piece at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, NV. I am excited to see how the new year unfolds. http://hpalleikodesigns.blogspot.com/2008/12/trip-to-home-depot -ignites-passion.html |
