‘Home-based workers should be issued social security cards’
The government should issue social security cards to home-based workers and it should also take steps to fight terrorism, said home-based women workers at the Women’s Assembly on Monday. The Women Workers Help Line organised the event. They said they were contributing to the country’s economic development, but were being ignored. They urged the government to ratify the International Labour Organisation’s Convention 177. They demanded that the government abolish contract system, provide pension and scholarships to their children and register them as workers. Women’s Workers Help Line Director Bushra Khaliq said that there were about 20 million home-based workers in Pakistan, of which 12 million were women. She also said many home-based workers had worked in stitching, embroidery, shoe making, leather, dry-fruit peeling, jewellery and bangle industries. Almost every woman in these industries was earning Rs 20 to Rs 40 a day against 12-16 hours toil.
