County dangles $25 million carrot before Home Depot
The Shawnee County Commission needed no persuasion Thursday to approve a resolution for up to $25 million in revenue bonds designed to lure The Home Depot to build a distribution center in Topeka. Local officials have said the company hasn't made a final commitment, but they are optimistic. For nearly a year the identity of the company was kept secret, with local officials referring only to negotiations with "company A." Officials with the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce and Go Topeka, in announcing last week company A was The Home Depot, said the firm's willingness to be publicly identified was a sign of its intent. If completed, the facility could bring at least 300 jobs to Topeka initially with predictions of up to 600 in the future. Before commissioners could vote Thursday, chairwoman Shelly Buhler declared a public hearing on the matter to be open. No one from the public spoke either for or against the idea, so after a few seconds of waiting, the public hearing was closed and commissioners voted 3-0 in favor of the resolution. The resolution would authorize the issuance of up to $25 million in revenue bonds — to be paid off by the building's owner — for a warehouse and distribution center of 469,000 square feet on 75 acres in the Central Crossing Commerce Park in south Topeka. Technically the building would be built and owned by Seefried Industrial Properties Inc. and leased to The Home Depot. In other business, the commission: • Amended the 2008 holiday schedule to allow county employees to be off duty on Friday, Dec. 26, in addition to the already approved holiday days of Dec. 24 and 25. Commissioner Vic Miller sponsored the change, noting that Gov. Kathleen Sebelius had given state employees a day off on Dec. 26. However, a check with the governor's office later determined that state employees won't be off on Wednesday, Dec. 24. http://www.cjonline.com/stories/121908/loc_369256797.shtml |
