Necedah family fights with Home Depot over defective door
The Jerges family's front door is rotting from the inside, covered in mold, and peeling at the bottom. "It's disgusting," said Alicia Jerges. "I can't believe Home Depot would want anyone to know we bought it from them." She and her husband paid $6,000 for the door when they built their new home several years ago. Three years after installing the door, it started to collect black mold spots. Jerges contacted the manufacturer, but the company has since gone out of business. So Jerges communicated with Home Depot asking them to pay for repairs. Home Depot agreed to pay half the repair cost. But Jerges wasn't satisfied. "This is an expensive door," she said. "I have a 20 year warranty on my carpeting that I walk on. This is an outside door. It's meant to be outside. I think Home Depot should stand behind their products." A Home Depot spokesman contacted 27 News to tell us the company is not willing to pay the entire repair cost. Home Depot says the door started having problems after its one-year warranty expired. The spokesman admits doors should last longer than three years and that it was probably defective, but the company says an out-of-warranty product is the customer's responsibility.
