The end of the home improvement big-box?
The market for big-box home improvement retailing in Canada is on the wane, according to a new report in Hardlines, even as home improvement chain Lowe’s opens its eighth store in Canada. "We are seeing a gradual slowdown in the expansion of the big box,” says Michael McLarney, publisher of the industry report. "Reasons range from market saturation, as new sites become harder and harder to find, to changing tastes of Canadian consumers." Canada will have 274 big boxes by year’s end, one store for every 26,000 families in Canada, McLarney said.
