Secret revealed: Company A is Home Depot
A distribution center for The Home Depot could bring 300 jobs to Topeka, a Go Topeka official said Friday.

The distribution center originally was known only as Company A, but Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce and Go Topeka officials released details of the project Friday because a proposal for as much as $25 million in industrial revenue bonds will go before the Shawnee County Commission on Thursday, said Steve Jenkins, senior vice president of economic development for Go Topeka.

"We want everyone to know it is not yet final, but we continue to move optimistically forward on the project," Jenkins said.

Seefried Properties Inc. plans to build a 465,000-square-foot distribution center in the Central Crossing Commerce Park, located just north of S.W. 57th Street and west of S.W. Topeka Boulevard. The facility will be constructed and owned by Seefried Properties and potentially leased to The Home Depot, said a statement from the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce/Go Topeka. The location is north of the Target Distribution Center.

"It's been almost a year we've been working this project," Jenkins said.

An application has been submitted to county commissioners for the issuance of IRBs for the project. The application indicates the proposed project would employ 300 people by the end of 2012.

"We are honored to work with Seefried Properties and The Home Depot in an effort to bring this project to Topeka," said Doug Kinsinger, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce/Go Topeka. "Approval of the application by the county commissioners is one of many steps to be completed prior to an official announcement and groundbreaking."

Seefried Properties specializes in developing, leasing and managing business parks. The company leases and manages nearly 11 million square feet for its foreign and institutional clients.

"The application for IRB's indicates a maximum principal amount of $25 million for the commissioners to approve," Jenkins said. "We are excited and continue to work with both companies to bring this project to Topeka/Shawnee County and complement our existing diverse business community."

Jenkins said Seefried Properties looked at the Payless ShoeSource Distribution Center but decided against it because it wasn't the right configuration.

"It's much larger, and it didn't have the right dimensional characteristics," he said.

Jenkins said if given approval at the local level, construction would start in 2009. The distribution center would open with about 150 employees and then build up to 300 employees.

Jenkins said The Home Depot was a strong company, despite the economic slowdown.

Jenkins said Topeka has a ready work force because the Payless Distribution Center will close in mid-2009.

On Aug. 20, the Joint Economic Development Organization voted 7-0 to offer 75 acres of free land in the Central Crossing Commerce Park plus cash incentives that could total as much as $600,000. At the time, the project was called Company A.

Vic Miller, chairman of JEDO and vice chairman of the county commission, said the deal with The Home Depot isn't a certainty because there is no formal commitment yet. But it looks extremely promising, he said.

"For Topeka to land a company of this magnitude at a time like this is an indication of what kind of team we've put together to work on industrial development," Miller said.

Miller said he hopes construction is completed by the end of 2009.

He said employment could grow to 600 employees.

Miller said the deal was similar to attracting the Target Distribution Center in the early 2000s.

In October, Del Monte Foods opened a new distribution center in Topeka, employing 75 people.
