Volunteers from Lowe's make home improvements at Grandma's House in Tulare
Lowe's Home Improvement Center volunteers came out to Grandma's House to do some needed upgrading to the facility, says Flora Gibson-Johnson. Gibson-Johnson is the founder of Grandma's House, an after-school tutoring program in Tulare. Lowe's volunteers came out and fixed plumbing, including a leaking toilet and faucet, she said. They also planted trees and did other home improvements for the nonprofit organization. A member of Gibson-Johnson's church who works at Lowe's told the store about Grandma's House, she said. The store does various community outreach projects. Recently, store employees planted flowers at Maple School. Tutoring continues Grandma's House has been open since Nov. 18 in the Lincoln School area, serving seven to 10 students with after-school tutoring. Students who receive tutoring at Grandma's House are in kindergarten through sixth graders have had below-basic scores on California standardized tests and have been referred to the program. The first few days, Gibson-Johnson said, featured meet-and-greet sessions for both the students and the grandparent tutors. "They had to draw a picture of themselves, because you can tell a lot about children by the pictures they draw," she said. Gibson-Johnson is a retired educator who started the organization. "We had children describe the picture," she said. "In all that we taught reading comprehension. We established a story from the pictures." On the second day, the grandparents told students about themselves. Gibson-Johnson said she was impressed by how it went. Grandma's House is at 535 South R St. http://www.visaliatimesdelta.com/article/20081211/NEWS01/812110318 |
