Interior designers team up to form Two Creative
Monica Walterscheid and Mary Howard aren't afraid to break a nail or two. The two Carlsbad residents are working their way through their first holiday season together at Two Creative, located at 110 S. Canyon St. It took a lot of work to get the high-end décor and design shop up to par, but the two women believe it was worth it. After all, store design is a lot like what they do for a living. "We're not afraid of getting dirty," Walterscheid said. "I don't have nails," noted Howard. "And I can just go get mine fixed," Walterscheid added. Walterscheid and Howard began putting their business concept together last January, but things didn't really move forward until they bought the old Lehman Paint Store in July. Two Creative opened Nov. 8. Previously, both women ran interior design stores out of their homes. Joining forces seemed liked a pretty good idea. "In January, we were maybe talking about a storefront," Howard said. "I was picturing something small." Another location option didn't quite work out, and the two women pounced on the opportunity when the Lehman building presented itself. Family members call their final effort a "big city store in a small town." Walterscheid and Howard sell custom walls, fabrics, bedding designs, custom interior lighting and much more. "What I think is very unique is up front we have custom, stone, hand-made fireplace mantels," Walterscheid noted. "Our walls are unique," Howard said. "They are not anything you are going to find anywhere else. They're affordable to high end." Walterscheid was also proud of the store's custom bedding options. "Someone can change with the seasons and not go with the major effort of having to change furniture out," she said. They also help you decide where to put your stuff wherever you purchased it. "We will come to your house and do consultations," Walterscheid. "You can use your own means what you have in the home and we will help you place it. We can do an extensive home redo." The two women share most store duties equally, but Walterscheid says her specialty is fabrics and bedding; Howard says she's strong in floral. Business has picked up for the holiday season, and the women plan to go all out for 2009. "There's no other store like this in Carlsbad," said Bonnie Bakal, executive director of Carlsbad's MainStreet program. "It's just fun to walk in. It's a real pleasure to be here. "I came in the other day and Monica was wiring a lamp," Bakal added. "I thought to myself, 'what can you not do?'" Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Walterscheid and Howard themselves are often "out in the field" helping with decorating, but they're happy to set up office appointments.
