Post-fire post: Rochester VFW in new home
When Bill Wright thinks about the tumultuous year the Rochester VFW Post 128 experienced, he can’t help but be thankful. The Veterans of Foreign Wars’ former home base at 184 Pennsylvania Ave. was heavily damaged Sept. 2, 2007, when an electrical shortage caused an early morning fire. The post lost nearly everything. However, post Commander Wright said the VFW was handed the deed to its new headquarters on July 20, and officially opened the doors on Veteran’s Day. “The good Lord smiled upon us through this whole venture,” Wright said as he toured the building Tuesday. The post — which has about 275 post members and 100 social members — moved to the former welfare office at 179 Virginia Ave. Wright said the building was purchased for $475,000. The old site, where the VFW had planned to build an addition to their headquarters, was sold for $55,000 to Passavant Memorial Homes. Wright said Passavant plans to build a group home at the site. Wright said after the fire, the VFW’s meetings continued, many of which were moved to the Rochester Elks. And the annual Beaver County POW/MIA motorcycle run that the group organizes each September, continued as planned. “It is so nice to have our own place back,” Wright said. “A whole year of meeting in other clubs, all of these clubs opened their doors to us … but it wasn’t our crowd. It’s nice to have our home back,” he said. Portions of the new 13,000 square-foot headquarters have been remodeled through member volunteers and area businesses. Wright said the building sat empty for about six years. Most items had to be purchased new, including bar stools, pool tables, chairs and a larger bar. Many of the offices have recycled furniture. Desks, filing cabinets and chairs were donated from Beaver County Mental Health and US Airways. Another company donated labor to put down asphalt in the parking lot. Wright said the post’s only source of income at this time is the Canteen, or the VFW’s bar. With limited funds, the organization has had to make do in whatever way they could as far as refurbishing goes. The building still needs new drop ceilings, restroom and kitchen restorations and new floor and walls, Wright said. Wright said overall, relocating saved them half of what they would have paid to remodel the old headquarters. When the building is complete, the 9,000-square-foot banquet room will be rented for receptions and parties. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Beaver County Chapter 862, has been invited to make the building their new home as well. The vets have been given an office, a large store room and an area for their post exchange, where they will sell sweatshirts and other veteran memorabilia. “We have a lot to do, but we have our foot in the door,” Wright said. “We’re broke, but we do own our building.” http://www.timesonline.com/articles/2008/12/09/news/ doc493f3b3c0b0fe900625126.txt |
