Home and garden club news
When 26 members of the Peas-in-a-Pod Junior Garden Club met Nov. 18, they welcomed Claire Miller, who has been attending as a new member. Most of them were wearing the leaf print shirts made at the previous meeting. "Saving Golden Sheaves" was a simple project where wheat was held as a cluster until a bow of wired golden ribbon was attached. The children were challenged by Mary Lee Minor to list blessings on a tag. This was tied onto the bow to take home and place where family and guests would notice it. A second group put together seed flowers contrived from the dried centers of plants. A small cardboard collar was made and glued beneath the dried bloom flowerhead. Seeds were then set in place on the ring of glue. Lauren Copeland, Dana Rausch, Diane Sand and Phyllis Brunson worked on the activities and prepared materials. Ribbons were presented to nine members who had entered the artistic division of the region 7 flower show in October. Eleni Smock and Jenna Woodard shared a rosette for their design that received "best of show." Lena Stiles had a blue-ribbon chrysanthemum. Near the end of the meeting, Minor displayed some artifacts from native American cultures. She asked the kids to decide whether the object had come from the earth (actual soil, stone, or clay), or a plant or animal. They recognized the origins of pottery, deer hides, head bands, necklaces with seeds and hide. The porcupine quill basket and necklace were difficult to classify. A grapevine ball was used to play an active game. Snacks were provided by Aryn Copeland, Allison Heacock and Smock. Earth, Wind and Flowers The Earth, Wind and Flowers Garden Club had the first of a series of workshops Nov. 25. Members came to Mary Lee Minor's home to learn how to arrange a moribana-style design. Several shallow containers were displayed. Prints of pictures helped participants see the artistry applied using asymmetrical balance. Guided by either the container or the material, a designer must achieve a feeling of depth or establish a mood. An upright or slanting approach can be selected. A guest of the club, Eileen Bunner, was pleased with her design of holly and carnations. Member June Gebhardt presented a mood with her work. Bent-over white pine branches and white Fuji mums suggested a storm with snow. A kinetic design workshop is scheduled for Jan. 26 at Minor's home. Petal Pushers Garden Club BUCYRUS -- Seven members met Dec. 1 in the basement of St. Paul's Lutheran Church as guests of the Earth, Wind and Flowers Garden Club for its holiday design workshop. Those attending created door wreaths and centerpieces using evergreen cuttings, pine cones, rose hips, bows, candles and cinnamon sticks. Members of the EWF Club assisted by giving design tips and lessons in bow making. Many decorations were made to adorn members' homes for the holiday season. A dessert table was provided by EWF Club members. http://www.bucyrustelegraphforum.com/article/20081209/LIFESTYLE/ 812090308 |
