Murray gears up for Park debut confident of home improvement
FRED Murray has backed Exeter City to improve their home form as he prepares to make his competitive debut at St James's Park. The ex-Northampton Town defender was handed his first start of the season at the weekend after he replaced the injured Matt Taylor at the heart of the City defence. And the 28-year-old looks set to keep his place in the side as City come up against lowly Rotherham. Murray cannot wait to play a competitive match at St James's Park and insists that City owe their supporters a performance following some inconsistent results at home. "I knew when I came to the club that I would have to wait for my time," he said. "I can understand it because if I was the manager then I wouldn't have changed it because the team had been playing so well. "But I am long enough in the tooth to keep myself fit and hungry, knowing your chance will come. "I enjoyed my debut on Saturday and now I am looking forward to Tuesday night. I am sure the boys will be confident and we owe the fans a performance and a win." City have found it difficult to break teams down at St James's Park this season, having won just three of their eight games on home soil. But Murray believes their fortunes will turn around as the Grecians chase back-to-back promotions. "Sometimes when teams sit back against you it can be very difficult," said Murray. "Even some of the best teams in the world struggle at home sometimes. But we have identified some things we can do better at home and we feel we can get better. "We won our last home game and we hope to carry that on tonight." City came back from a goal down, and a man down, to rescue a 1-1 draw at Morecambe on Saturday thanks to Manny Panther's late equaliser. The draw kept City in eighth place in League Two, while Rotherham would be up there challenging for a play-off place had they not been docked 17 points at the start of the season. Murray added: "We know they are a good side and we won't underestimate them whatsoever. "There are no easy games in this league but it is all about attitude and application and, if you make sure that is right in every game, then you have got a chance." Murray has urged supporters to get right behind City tonight as they aim to climb back into the play-off places. "The home crowd can play a massive role," he said. "They have been great all season. "I have had to sit in the stands and watch the games a lot this season and you get a sense that this is a really homely club. "The fans have been right behind us and we need them to carry on doing that. Hopefully we can give them a performance and all three points." http://www.thisisexeter.co.uk/sport/Murray-gears-Park-debut-confident -home-improvement/article-500942-detail/article.html |
