Royals need home improvement
Since the Reading Royals' inaugural 2001-02 season, the Sovereign Center has been a rough place for opposing teams.

The Royals had a winning percentage of .626 at home in their first seven seasons. No Reading team has ever had a losing record at home.

So the 1-5-0 start at the Sovereign Center has been just another wacky aspect of a wacky season for the Royals so far.

"Good hockey teams win at home," coach Jason Nobili said. "It's something we have to improve on."

Reading got a much-needed 5-3 win Sunday at the Sovereign Center against Cincinnati to improve to 2-5-0 at home. The Royals (5-9-0) are slightly better on the road at 3-4-0.

"On the road it's a little easier sometimes because you keep things a little more simple," Nobili said Sunday. "Here at home the pressure to win is very important. But it's something you have to do.

"Certainly a goal of ours is to be a better home team. It's nice to get a win here today. It makes a difference for the week going into Johnstown and back here next weekend."

The Royals are in the midst of their busiest month of the year (15 games in 30 days), but they get four days to prepare for Friday night's game at Johnstown and Saturday's matchup with Elmira back at the Sovereign Center.

"We're going to put in a good three hard days of practice to set the tone for Friday night," Nobili said.

•Two to AHL: Royals defensemen Kevin Schaeffer and Tyson Marsh were called up Monday to Providence and Chicago, respectively.

The loss of Schaeffer and Marsh, arguably the team's top two blue liners, leaves the Royals with six D-men, two of whom are on the injured-reserve list.

Schaeffer, 24, spent most of last season with Providence. It's his second call-up already this season. Marsh, 24, spent much of last year in the AHL with Rockford.

•Big bounce: Matt Herneisen was as surprised as anyone when his cross-ice pass hit Cincinnati goalie Kyle Gajewski and bounced into the net for Reading's fourth goal Sunday.

"Good things happen when you throw the puck at the net," the Royals captain said. "I saw him (Dan Rudisuela) coming back door, and he was wide open. The last thing in my mind was to score a goal; I was trying to zip it across to him."

Herneisen said that's not the flukiest goal he's scored as a pro. Earlier in his career he took a shot from the boards along the goal line and saw the puck hit a stick, land on the goalie's back and dribble in.

"I'll take whatever I can get," Herneisen said. "They all count the same."

•Check mates: The Royals played possibly their best 20 minutes of the season during Sunday's second period. Several big hits set the tone, including Mac Faulkner's shot on Tom Sawatske, which came just before Brock Hooton's game-tying goal.

"A big hit like that, maybe a shift or two before, gets the momentum going, then it kind of snowballs," Herneisen said. "That's definitely what happened in the second period. There were a lot of guys hitting in the second period.

"There were guys stepping out of character that aren't big hitters, throwing some checks. If we want to win, that's what we have to do every night."

•Stepping up: Royals goalie Danny Taylor had another big night Sunday with 37 saves on 40 shots. In his last three games he's 2-1-0 with a 2.67 goals-against average and a 0.938 save percentage.

"He's had to (step up)," Nobili said. "The fact that (backup) James Reimer's been out has put him on an island. You want to play every day; most goalies will tell you that. But it's a lot of work with the schedules we undertake.

"So hats off to Dan to do that. He never complains. If he has a bad goal or a bad period or a bad game, he handles things professionally. It's nice to see him get a win."

•Breakaways: After facing Cincinnati in five of their first 14 games of the season, the Royals won't see the Cyclones until Feb. 3. . . . The 4-2 lead the Royals took into the third period Sunday marked just the second time this season they've led after two. . . . Herneisen is a team-best plus-8 on a team that is minus-22 overall. . . . The Royals released emergency-backup goalie Rob Lemelin.
