Improve home's interior without spending a whole lot of money
With the change of seasons comes the perfect opportunity to tweak your interiors. As you start to make design decisions, remember that versatility is a virtue.

The Home Interior Warehouse -- Furniture & Design in Walled Lake features flexible furniture that makes a statement in a variety of settings. Whether it's a chest of drawers, console, accent table or chair, styles run the gamut from soft contemporary to elegant traditional. Accessories, including lamps, artwork and floral arrangements, provide another easy way to update your look.

"The beauty of these pieces is greatly in their versatility," says Jackie Schwartz, designer and owner of Home Interior Warehouse, a 17,000-square-foot showroom. "A perfect example is a Bombay-style three-drawer chest that works next to the bed, at the end of a sofa or as a focal point in a hallway." Imagine one piece perfectly suited for three distinct areas of the home!

In addition to saving money by using a single item in a number of ways, the furniture starts at less than $200. Silk floral arrangements and accessories are priced at $30 and more.

There are additional ways to spruce up your surroundings without spending a great deal of time or money. "I love the idea of painting one wall in a room with an accent color," Schwartz says. "For example, think about painting an accent wall in your dining room or family room. If you entertain often, try a red. It's proven to stimulate bold, lively conversation and appetites. Try a golden yellow in your kitchen or home office ... known to get creative juices flowing." An accent wall gives you a little more leeway than painting an entire room.

Schwartz also likes to incorporate a few seasonal touches, such as cinnamon or pumpkin scented candles. She suggests adding a seasonal centerpiece or foyer arrangement at this time of year. "There are beautiful designer colors available in silk flowers and greenery today that are truly breathtaking," she says. These elements are just as easy to add to your rooms as they are to take away when the time comes.

For those who need some guidance when it comes to visualizing how various items may work in different settings, the showroom has a handful of furniture on rollers, art that can be rearranged and accessories that can be moved around. "People can really mix and match to get a feel for how great these pieces look together," Schwartz says.

When filling your home with fabulous finds, Schwartz says there are no hard-and-fast rules or strict style categories. "The fun is in the mixing and matching," she says.

As Schwartz explains, rather than move, it is now common for people to improve their surroundings, instead. "While the real estate market is slow, many people have decided to invest in their current homes," she says. "We have found that our clients are focusing their energy on updating and bringing new life to the rooms they use most often. Why not bring some new comfort and joy to the homes we already have?"
