New homes plan at least two years away
Work to transform an historic Norwich golf course into housing will not start for at least two years. Earlier this year, members of the 115 year-old Royal Norwich golf course voted in favour of proposals to sell off the land to developer Goymour Properties Ltd, which wants to build what could be a major housing development on the site. The 450-plus members of the club, which is based on Drayton High Road, will be transferred to the nearby Weston Park Golf Club owned by Goymour, which will receive a £7m upgrade aimed at creating a championship standard facility. But the move has prompted concern among people in Hellesdon worried about the high number of homes that could be built, the demand for them and the traffic problems it will create. Today John Brown, chairman of the golf club's relocation committee, said people had at least two years before they would see any changes to the course, and only then if planning permission was granted by the council. He said: “After Christmas they will start putting together planning applications and at some stage thereafter, depending how far down the line they get, we will carry out a similar venture at Weston.” The proposal was put to Royal Norwich Golf Club members at a special general meeting last month, who voted overwhelmingly in favour of selling the course to Goymour Properties. Simon Lee, operations director of Goymour Properties, said it had not yet been decided how many houses would be built, but if the go-ahead was given work could begin within the next two to five years. He said: “The government guideline is 30 houses per hectare but there will obviously need to be green spaces and recreation areas so the scheme has to take that into account as well as affordable housing. “We will look at all of these thing while we draw up the palling agreement and hopefully next year things will begin to move at a faster pace. “It's a bit of a moveable feast at the moment.” Broadland ward councillor for Hellesdon North West Tom Gasson has been outspoken at his condemnation of the site and although he believed the time frame could provide an opportunity to upgrade amenities before the work starts, he said he remained less than positive about the development. “In the meantime hopefully some plans will be put in place to improve the road structure which is a must,” he said. “Everybody I've spoken to locally doesn't seem happy with the idea of the development. I'm not surprised at the time frame. I can't see the present economic situation changing for a long time, at least a few years which I don't think helps.” http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/content/news/story.aspx?brand= |
