Home Improvement Challenge boosts lives of youth
The countdown is on for nine young adults who will have new, professionally-designed homes by the end of the week. That's thanks to the Austin nonprofit, LifeWorks. News 8 Austin's Heidi Zhou sat down with LifeWorks Executive Director Susan McDowell. "LifeWorks is an organization dedicated to transitioning youth and families from crisis to safety and success," McDowell said. "Many of our youth have experienced homelessness, teenage pregnancy or a lifetime growing up in the foster care system, so the Home Improvement Challenge is our opportunity to make wonderful homes for youth who haven't really known stable situations." The organization rents apartments to youth, but the Home Improvement Challenge enables teams of volunteers to come in and completely remake apartments in an effort to establish safe and caring homes for the youth. At any given year, YouthWorks sees more than 10,000 families, and several hundred in their housing programs. "The opportunity to live on their own, in an apartment is a tremendous opportunity and one they've achieved through a lot of hard work," McDowell said. "So, the Home Improve Challenge is that final step of making sure they have furniture and cleaning supplies and the things that can make a home a home."
