City plans home improvement fair
Following a well-attended series of homebuyer workshops, the City of Watsonville will host a home improvement fair on Sept. 17. The event is geared toward low-income homeowners and will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Watsonville Civic Plaza, 275 Main St. Housing Manager Suzanne Ise said the city got the idea to host the event when a number of homeowners, who had been cited for code enforcement violations, asked for advice as to how to alleviate the problems. “We can only assist people if they come to us before they start the work,” Blackwood said of federal regulations that bar the city from offering financial assistance if a project has already begun. Instead of simply reacting, city officials hope to get the word out about loan and grant programs available to assist homeowners. The city will also bring in experts from PG&E and Grid Alternatives to provide tips for green building and energy improvements during the event, which will be moderated by Sue Hoage, a representative of the Santa Cruz County Housing Authority.
