Mobile Home Park Problems
No one wants to live next to abandoned homes that are falling apart, but the people in one mobile home park say they have no choice. Residents of the Vicksburg mobile home park on Springfield’s north side say the list of problems keeps growing. “It's just going to take one accident or one thing for them to get hurt,” said resident Misty Klauzer. She’s afraid to let her kids play outside all because of problems at the mobile home park. “There are roofs that fell in on trailers, there's glass busted out, no skirting just really bad looking,” said Klauzer. She's not alone Billie Emerson's family has had to call the fire department twice all because of electrical problems. “All the power started to surge in our house and everything kept shutting off in the kitchen. We went to turn the breaker box on and sparks shot out,” said Emerson. “I think it's safe our there. We do everything we can 24 hour maintenance and that,” said owner Todd Foster. He says in the last two months he's torn down 9 abandoned homes, but it's slow going. Our hands are tied. When there are homes sitting there all we can do is board them up until we get legal possession,” said Foster. He says he's not only trying to clean up the look of the park, but kick out problem residents. He says eviction can take up to 120 days. Residents say Foster’s not fixing the problem and they won't feel safe until he does. “I don't want to think that my house is ok. I want to know it's safe for my kids and family to live here,” said Emerson. The Springfield city zoning department says so far it hasn't got any complaints from people at Vicksburg.
