Taylorsville couple gets FEMA mobile home
Many Hoosiers who lost property in last month's record flooding are getting housing assistance. FEMA is delivering mobile homes to residents in several Indiana counties, including Bartholomew. This is a big day for the Fosters. Bob and Mary are going to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in their new mobile home. Mary Foster says she and her husband have been "living with my sons in laws. There are twelve people there and one bathroom." The Fosters, who are currently displaced after the recent flooding in Columbus, are moving into a 14'X60' mobile home provided by FEMA. "This is designed as temporary housing. Anywhere from thirty days to however many up to eighteen months folks can be in these residences while they repair their home or in the worst case rebuild their home," said Mike Smith, FEMA. "I can't wait to be able to go to the bathroom without hollering I need to go! Hurry!" Mary Foster said. The Fosters' mobile home is different than the temporary trailers used for Hurricane Katrina. Many victims at that time were sickened by high levels of formaldehyde. The Fosters' new home has already been tested and found to be safe. The Army Corp of Engineers is currently setting up other mobile homes formerly stored at Camp Atterbury for testing. If they are found to be safe, the mobile homes will be destined for Terra Haute, Martinsville and Columbus. "It seems like they were Johnny on the spot," said Mary Foster. The state estimates it will need anywhere from 100 to 500 mobile homes for Hoosiers like the Fosters. "I've been sleeping in a recliner since the Saturday night of the flood and that bed looks nice," said Bob Foster, checking out his new bedroom. Now for the first time in a long time the Fosters have a place they can call home. http://www.wthr.com/Global/story.asp?S=8663362&nav=9Tai |
