Home Improvement Store Expands
Sixty tons of home remodeling materials that would have ended up in the landfill are back on store shelves. On Thursday, Flower City Habitat for Humanity had a grand opening at it's newly renovated hardware store on Culver Road. It's like walking into your typical home improvement shop. Everything from paint to lamps, even ovens. But the materials cost half the price. "It's well below market value price so we take a look at what all these items would go for if they were sold in a regular retail store and then mark it way down," said Diane Walker, Habitat for Humanity. Some of the items are second hand, many are brand new. "We have a lot of big boxes or manufacturers who will donate end of season items like windows, doors, all kinds of things," said Arthur Woodward, Habitat for Humanity. Often times these items end up in the trash. "What this enables us to do is recycle those materials and make sure that they don't end up in the landfill," said Woodward. With construction costs up, this is a way do-it yourselfers can get supplies and save a few bucks. It's about recycling and the idea seems to be catching on, the Culver Road store is four times the size of the start up store in the Public Market.” It’s giving (the materials) a new life and a new use somewhere else." All of the proceeds from the store will go towards Flower City Habitat for Humanity's affordable housing program. Based on projected sales they hope to be able to fund two to three houses a year. http://rochesterhomepage.net/content/fulltext/?cid=21241 |
