Mind Your Business blog: The Home Depot showrooms to switch from incandescent to fluorescent
When ever I’m in a large hardware or “home improvement retailer,” I always look at the beautiful chandeliers and other lighting fixtures and wonder how much electricity is wasted for the bright lights to glow all day long. The Home Depot must have read my mind. The big box retailer announced today that by the fall, all 1,973 of its stores will launch an in-store energy conservation program to trade out the incandescent bulbs in its showroom light fixtures with compact fluorescents, or CFLs. The company estimates it will save $16 million annually in energy costs. And for those eco-friendly individuals who purchase CFLs, you should know those bulbs can’t be tossed out in your everyday household trash because while the bulbs save energy, they contain harmful chemicals such as mercury. So Home Depot is also extending the green initiative to cus-tomers, offering a drop-off location for any “expired, unbroken CFL bulbs,” making it one of few retailers to do so. The store will work with an environmental management company to coordinate transportation and recycling of CFLs. In 2007, The Home Depot sold more than 75 million CFLs, saving consumers roughly $4.8 billion in energy costs and almost 52 billion pounds of carbon dioxide greenhouse gasses over the life of the bulbs. http://www.coloradoan.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ |
