Home Depot will stop selling pesticides for lawn and garden use
As provinces ban or propose legislation to ban the use of cosmetic pesticides, including a ban under consideration in Nova Scotia, the Home Depot has announced its intention to voluntarily stop selling pesticides for lawn and garden use. Quebec phased in a law over three years that, by 2006, eliminated more than 200 lawn-care products from retail shelves, and Ontario has just announced its intention to go further, banning over 300 pesticide products by 2009. A Prince Edward Island government standing committee has also proposed a three-year phased ban on retail pesticide sales. In all cases, commercial products for agriculture and forestry are still available. Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister Jamie Muir said last week the minority Conservative government was still finalizing its legislative agenda for the session that began Thursday. However, he said, the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities has presented him with a list of priorities and its number one request was a ban on the use of cosmetic pesticides. Muir said the issue will be presented to the Conservative caucus and a decision will be made “in short order” on whether to proceed with a total ban. The Halifax Regional Municipality is the only unit in the province with the legislated authority to ban pesticide use, which it has exercised for a number of years. Muir said HRM was the only municipality interested in having that authority when the province first put it into legislation in 1998. Home Depot announced it would voluntarily stop selling traditional pesticides and herbicides in its stores across Canada by the end of 2008 and will increase its selection of environmentally friendly alternatives. However, traditional pesticides and herbicides will be available at the Sydney store until at least June, said store manager Brent Kerr http://www.capebretonpost.com/index.cfm?sid=129957&sc=145 |
