Home Depot spent $1.18 million to lobby in 2007
The Home Depot Inc. spent $1.18 million on its own behalf in 2007 to lobby the federal government on timber and energy legislation, among other issues. The home improvement chain spent $607,000 to lobby in the second half of the year, according to a form posted online Feb. 14 by the House's clerk office. The Atlanta-based company lobbied on a measure that would ban the importation, sale or purchase of timber harvested in violation of U.S. or foreign laws and on the regulation and supervision of industrial-loan companies. Home Depot (nyse: HD - news - people ) and other retailers have pushed for permission ot operate the bank-like companies, which are federally insured institutions operated by nonfinancial companies that can issue credit cards, make loans and take deposits. Home Depot also lobbied on a massive energy bill that would, among other things, do away with the incandescent light bulb in favor of energy-efficient lighting. Its lobbying also included trade measures, an increase in the minimum wage and consumer product safety legislation. Lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches under a federal law enacted in 1995. Copyright 2008 Associated Press.
