Northwest, Fairless set to gauge progress
As Fairless and Northwest prepare to take the court tonight for what figures to be an important non-league matchup at Northwest, the only thing either team knows for certain is its record. At 3-0, the Indians have gotten off to a fast start, while the Falcons currently find themselves 3-2 and struggling to find some consistency. So, with the season still in its early stages, both squads will take a step toward finding their identities this evening inside the Northwest High gymnasium. “Obviously, there’s a lot of games in the season,” Northwest coach Mike Lower said. “I think they’re definitely one of the better teams in the area. We’re still trying to figure out where we’re at, so I think it’ll be a definite test for us.” Fairless coach Matt Kramer and his team feel the same way and they’re looking at the matchup with the Indians as a good barometer of where they currently stand this season. “Northwest will be a formidable opponent. They’re a team that does a great job of taking care of its home floor; they’ve always been very difficult to beat everywhere, but especially on their home floor,” Kramer said. “To go over there and win a game, you have to handle their multiple defensive looks and you’re going to have to be able to deal with a hostile environment and keep your composure, which are some of the things we’ve preached and are starting to do better with.” It certainly helps that Fairless has already played plenty of games on the road. Tonight’s tilt at Northwest will bring an end to the Falcons’ brutal early season schedule, which saw them play five of their first six contests in their opponents’ home gym. But while Kramer would like to come out of that stretch at 4-2, his main focus is on the team getting better. “After eight years, I don’t ever stress record while we’re in the midst of the season,” Kramer said. “After eight years of this, who we play and the type of program we are, you know, a smaller school, I stress improvement from the beginning to the end of the year, whether I feel like we’re a championship team or a team that’s rebuilding. So, I’ve stressed that with this team too. But that being said, coming through this at 4-2, in hindsight, if we can do it, would be a tremendous accomplishment in light of the kind of stumbling start we got off to. But that’s a big if.” One thing that won’t be iffy is the tempo of the game between the Indians and Falcons. Both squads like to play an up-tempo style that should lead to plenty of transition buckets and outside shots. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t slow it down and execute a halfcourt offense if the situation calls for it. “We look to run when the opportunity presents itself and we’ve had some success with that,” Lower said. “Then we went to West Branch and had to play a slow-down game and we were able to win that one. So we hope we can be able to adapt to the style we need to use to be successful. “We like to get up and down the floor. We look for that good initial shot and if we don’t get it out of transition, we definitely want to be patient and make four or five passes. But initially we always like to look to run.” Regardless of tempo, however, a game between two teams of this caliber should point out the strengths and weaknesses both squads possess. And at this early time in the season, that will likely pay dividends to both Northwest and Fairless in the long run, no matter the outcome. “I think it’s a good early-season gauge for both teams but I wouldn’t call it a must-win for either team,” Kramer said. “I just think it’s a really good look for both myself and Coach Lower to see where our teams are and what we need to do to continue to improve.” http://www.indeonline.com/index.php?ID=22918&Category=2 |
