Gym Dogs ranked No.1 in Preseason Poll
ATHENS, Ga. - The three-time-defending NCAA Champion Gym Dogs received a commanding 28 of 35 first-place votes in the 2008 Preseason Coaches Poll to grab the top ranking for a third straight season. The Gym Dogs, fresh off their third consecutive NCAA title last spring, received 866 total points, 78 more than second-place Florida, which received one first-place vote. NCAA runner-up Utah (779) finished third with three first-place nods. UCLA, Stanford, Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Michigan and LSU round out the top 10. "It's always great to be ranked at the top," head coach Suzanne Yoculan said, "but there is a long season ahead and the only No. 1 ranking that matters is the one after the last meet of the year. We have a lot of work to do and look forward to the challenges this season presents." In all, Georgia is set to face seven of the other nine teams in the top 10 in the 2008 regular season, beginning with a meet at No. 3 Utah in Salt Like City in the season-opener Jan. 11 and at No. 5 Stanford on Jan. 13. Additionally, all 12 of the Gym Dogs' regular-season opponents are ranked in the nation's top 25. After the season-opening weekend and a trip to No. 2 Florida on Jan. 18, Georgia debuts at home Jan. 26 against No. 10 LSU. No. 4 UCLA, No. 14 Arkansas, No. 17 Iowa State, No. 24 Kentucky and No. 25 N.C. State all will make appearances in Athens as well. Fans can get their first look at the No. 1 Gym Dogs on Jan. 5 at Sneak Peak in Stegeman Çoliseum. Doors open at 3 p.m. with exhibition performances beginning at 4 p.m. Admission is free, and this will be the only time this season for fans to take photos with the gymnasts and get autographs. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Gym Dogs calendar and all fans can pick up team posters and schedule cards.
