Canned goods, laundry turn any house into a home gym
Putting away your groceries ? Stop and give me 15 biceps curls. When it’s time to work out, some people head to the gym, but there’s plenty of work you can do right at home to supplement your fitness. With a little innovation, you can turn common household items into equipment, and simple tasks into exercise. Victoria Nye teaches fitness classes at Best Fitness in Albany, N. Y. Here are some of her suggestions for using more energy at home Use canned goods as arm weights. You can do biceps curls and tricep extensions while you put away your groceries. You can also lift cans overhead to work shoulders. Do two or three sets of 10 to 12 repetitions. For legs and glutes, take every opportunity to lunge and squat. Nye suggests doing lunges with the grocery cart, or squats with the laundry basket. She also suggested doing legs lifts while seated in a chair (you can put your kids on your feet for fun weight — but beware of overloading your knees ). When you’re picking things up around the house, whether it’s clothes or soccer equipment, bend your knees and lift the items over your head before placing them where they belong. Turn sedentary activities into a workout for your core. When you’re sitting in front of the computer or TV, engage your abdominal muscles by keeping your feet lifted at least 3 inches off the floor. Instead of watching TV from the comfort of your couch, hit the ground and do some stomach crunches. It takes a concerted effort to turn chores into aerobic exercise, but it can be done. Turn household chores like vacuuming, mopping and weeding into a workout by speeding up your pace and bringing your whole body into the movements. For best results, keep up this pace for at least 20 to 30 minutes. http://www.nwanews.com/adg/Style/210984/ |
